The trend for the stock market is set by the direction of the 4-year cycle, which recently bottomed in October of this year. Previous lows of 1982, 87, 90 and 94 are shown. Since 1960 every 4-year cycle bottom has had a drop in the long-term RSI indicator below 20, except the current cycle bottom which indicates something may be changing.

The monthly swings in this market have had generally higher highs and higher lows since 1982 with a tendency to drop below a swing low to make a 4-year cycle bottom as did occur in the decline into the October low.
